Tips for selecting a Photographer and Frequently Asked Questions

When Should I book?

For a Wedding Photographer - book early, you should start your search for a photographer about 14 months before the big day and make a booking at least 12 months in advance - particularly if your wedding is during the peak Wedding season of June-August, a good photographer will only cover one Wedding per day therefore you need to book ahead.

What should I look for?

Ask to see an example of a full wedding album as well as the “best of” portfolio, this way you will see how your album could potentially look. Make sure that the photographs are the work of the photographer who will be taking your wedding pictures and not just a selection of the best from everyone.

At Scotia Photography we will show you a mixed portfolio demonstrating the different styles of photography and at least two complete albums which are finished in a traditional and contemporary style. All the photographs we show you have been taken by either Sarah or Gregor, both photographers will be present on your day.

What Style of photography do you do?

As there are two photographers present on the day we are able to capture a mixture of photographic styles and even if you prefer the reportage style of photography we recommend that you take a little time to have a small number of formal shots to give you the maximum choice.

If you are not sure of which style you would prefer here is a brief explanation of each -

Reportage or candid - this involves the photographer taking pictures of the events as they unfold during the day without any intervention to pose people. It has it’s origins in photo-journalism and is perfect for people who want natural, unposed photographs of themselves enjoying their special day.

Traditional or Classic - This involves the photographer setting up formal shots of the Bride, Groom and Bridal party. It is good to have a few group shots set up in this way as this adds to the record of your day. It does not necessarily mean very rigid line-ups of people, in fact many “natural” looking images were in actual fact staged by the photographer.

Will we get written confirmation?

Once you have made your booking and placed your deposit with us we will provide you with a written receipt outlining all the items you will receive, this will include the specific number of prints, the exact album and cover choice as well as any additional extras.

Do we get to keep the proofs?

All the images taken during the day will be written to a DVD disc for you to keep and use to make reprints from, we will supply you with a copyright certificate to prove you have the right to reproduce the images for personal use. We will also archive your images for at least five years so should anything happen to your copy of the disc you can purchase a second copy.
